A few days ago I received an email with a question about my 72mm CP Version 1 and dedicated lens hood. I thought I would write and respond to the email along with adding a few pictures.
*** I was able to read your post about the 72mm CPL (ver. 1) with the HN-13 dedicated hood (Btw, BIG HELP.. was previously planning an HN-13 with the new Ver. 2 CPL if I have not stumb led upon your blog. I am now planning to get the same set-up as well. Is there anyway that u can send me an image of the filter? I have no idea what it looks like. Would you also happen to know how to differentiate the version 1 and 2. ***
Basically, the Nikon HN-13 Lens Hoods is too big for the new Nikon Version 2 72mm Circular Polarizing Filter. You NEED to get the 72mm CPL Version 1 because the diameter is larger. I believe as mention previously it is about 85mm. The HN-13 Lens hood has about an 85mm diameter thread. So you the first version of the Nikon Circular Polarizing 72mm filter will only work. Attached are some photos and you will see the slight size difference.
If you want to use the newer Nikon 72mm Circular Polarizing Filter Version II, then you can use the B+W 72mm Screw-In Metal Telephoto Lens Hood. This works perfectly.
The only difference that I see between the version 1 and version 2 CPL filter is that the first version is larger and heavier. The CPL 2 slim version is much lighter. There could be other differences, but I am not sure.
If anyone has any other questions about these filters and lens hoods, please feel free to email or post comments anytime. Thanks!
