The Nikon HN-34 and HN-13 Screw-in lens hoods I surprisingly learned only worked on the Nikon Circular Polarizing Filter CPL I version. This is the first version and not the newer slim CP II versions. I discovered that the outer thread diameter was actually about 85mm and not 72mm or 77mm. The screw-in diameters of the HN-34 and HN-13 Circular Polarizer Lens Filter Hoods were also 85mm.

So, I had to either not use these two lens hoods or simply buy a Nikon Circular Polarizer Version I. Since I purchased both Nikon lens hoods brand new, I figured I would try to find a good condition Circular Polarizer on Ebay. Luckily I found one and was excited to see that indeed everything works now with the HN-13 or HN-34 hoods and Nikon Circular Polarizing Filter version I. Interestingly enough, despite the slight additional weight of the older Nikon Circular Polarizing filter, I feel the setup is quite nice. These Nikon lens hoods are very difficult to find, so I am glad I now have a use for them. Also, by using a 72mm-77mm setup ring, I can use the filter with my 77mm lenses if I need to.

Thus I’m happy with how this CP filter and Screw-in lens hood adventure turned out. Keep in mind too that again a primary reason for getting these screw-in lens hoods was to allow me to rotate the Circular Polarizer by rotating the lens hood. By using the newer Nikon hoods, I would have to remove the hood first in order to rotate the CP filter. Then I would have to put the lens hood back on after that if I wanted to add a hood. Now it’s pretty slick to be able to rotate the hood and dial in the exact setting I want out of the Circular Polarizing Filter. It’s much more fun for me.
