This isn’t the sharpest picture in the world, but it was interesting how I took it. I was sitting in my car with my 70-200mm which probably looked like I had a gun or something. This guy was coming pretty much right at me. I shot the photograph in rapid fire through the windshield as he was coming towards me. You can see his eyes have met my lens and the bent lip is priceless. I wish it was a tad bit more in sharp, but it was a very quick photo. I’m sure he was wondering what I was doing. Funny.

Took this shot today of a train heading past Kita Nagano Station. It was flying right past me. Pretty cool. I chose black and white for this photo because I thought it fit the mood pretty well. The color shot was great and I may post if eventually, but for now this should work great. Trains in Japan are very fascinating and I’ve been riding them for almost 15 years now. I have also been driving for about five years now in Nagano and Tokyo which has been a welcome change. However, driving in Tokyo is still pretty insane.

A while back I did a photoshoot in Nagano Japan on the topic of High Key and using Flash. The following photographs and others were entirely shot using Nikon SB-800 flashes. This is a popular topic with a lot of friends who I shoot with and so when we get a chance to meet, we enjoy exploring the topic as much as we can. Models are compliments of Magee Salon in Japan and Charisma Hair Stylist Yoyo Miyazawa who worked the hair styles, make up, fasion, and provided other fantastic stylists to assist with the shoot. Some post processing was done in Photoshop to achieve each individual’s desired look.

If anyone is interested in meeting in the Tokyo, Yokohama, or Nagano areas to work on some high key fashion shoots using flash and other resources, please contact me and I would be more than happy to get something going again. I can provide stylists, assistants, and models of course. A photoshop technique exchange is also incorporated for sharing post processing information. Please email if anyone is interested in putting together a photoshoot. Enjoy!

Finished a workshop called Photoshoot Grunge where we had a few models participating in Nagano City, Japan on behalf of Magee Salon. My wife Yoyo Miyazawa did the styling along with some of her talented co-workers. Photographs were later post processed in Photoshop using various techniques developed over the past couple of years. Textures were taken later after the photoshoot and used for layering on the images. If you anyone is interested in meeting up in Tokyo, Yokohama, or Nagano to do another Grunge or Urban photoshoot along a photoshop technique exchange, please feel free to send me an email anytime. Enjoy!

Some people have emailed me asking where I live in Japan. By car, I live about 5 minutes from Zenkoji, Temple which is located at the heart of Nagano-city. So you might say I live in Nagano city. Zenkoji is connected to the city which means I have a HUGE area to cover for all kinds of interesting photography. Whether it’s shooting people, street scenes, history, or whatever, I don’t have to travel far to find it. Of course I also like to head into the city like Tokyo and Yokohama because I lived there for almost 10 years, but I also like the countryside for it’s different photo opportunities. When I do photoshoots, I can travel to any part of Japan, but I usually hang out with other shooters in Tokyo, Yokohama, and of course Nagano.

Photoshot Japan is a new website dedicated to photography, workshops, photographers, and all things photo in Japan. I noticed that there was an abundant of information in most other countries, but very little in Japan.

Photoshot Japan is a new website dedicated to photography, workshops, photographers, and all things photo in Japan. I noticed that there was an abundant of information in most other countries, but very little in Japan. I thought I would try to change this a little and make it possible for Japan area photographers to exchange information. Although there are some groups out there already on the Internet, they are somewhat hard to find in my opinion or specific only to Tokyo. I hope to make Photoshoot Japan a place that might be easier to find for all residents of Japan both Foreign and Japanese.

If you are a photographer in Japan or you have an interest in Japan, please check out the Photoshoot Japan Forum.

Enjoy! Jim

There’s a ton of places to check out in Tokyo for photography, but here are a few popular places along the “Yamanote Train Line” that circles the Tokyo area. Each location is a station as well.

1. Shibuya Station – This is the young fashion center of Japan. Lots of gals, lights, people, cool buildings, etc. Has the famous all point crosswalk and big TVs.

2. Yoyogi Park Station – This is where all the street people, street bands, and “all walks of life” gather each day. This is probably THE street photo area of Tokyo.

3. Ginza Station – This is the area that really lights up at night. If you want some cool night photos, then this is THE place to go. It’s also the most expensive area. There’s not much there during the day however, but at night it’s the brightest for sure.

4. Shinjuku Station – This is where all the TV actors, actresses, and studios reside. Plus behind the stations is the “red light district” that is very famous for all the clubs and bars. Lots of action around there and plenty of interesting places to photograph.

5. Harajuku Station – This is the “Alternative” area where you’ll find a lot of the underground kids, colleges, and stuff that is not mainstream but very interesting. Also, this place is famous for Garage Bands and small club acts.

6. Roppongi – Off the Yamanote line a bit, this station area is the hang out for all the foreign folk, including military visitors. It’s expensive and there are lots of people from all over the world there.

7. Akasaka – This place is for the tourists and if you want some great shots of more “traditional” Japan, this is the place to go. You could spend hours with the camera in this area. It’s fabulous.

There are quite a few other areas as well, but you’ll probably run into them if traveling to the above areas. Just remember that the Yamanote Train runs in a circle and is what gets you to all of these places.

If you get extra time, Yokohama is also awesome. I lived there for quite a few years and there is so much to photograph there. Here are some of the best.

1. Sakuragicho – This place has an awesome waterfront park and lots of cool modern structures to shoot.

2. Ishikawacho – This place has Chinatown which has a ton of things to shoot. It’s a very large place.

3. Kamakura – This place has a great selection of temples and castle like structures.

4. Yokohama Station – This area has lots of places to photograph for street scenes and such. People shots are great here too.
